HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Astoria Owner’s Guide

If your HeatShield crown repair product has failed or is showing signs of wear, here’s the short version: we stock HeatShield-compatible crown repair materials on our trucks, and a typical crown repair in Astoria runs $450-$1,100 installed depending on crown size and how much of the existing crown needs rebuilding first. We can usually schedule within 3-5 business days during the spring and summer months. Most Astoria homeowners discover the problem the way you probably did: water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, spalling brick faces on the exterior, or a sweep pointing out crown damage during a routine cleaning. The crown is the concrete cap that sits on top of the chimney, and in a neighborhood with as many prewar rowhouses as Astoria, it’s the single most common point of water entry we see.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield manufactures crown repair products in two main lines: the Cerfractory CrownGuard system and the HeatShield Crown Repair mortar kit. Both are compatible with standard masonry chimneys, but here’s the gotcha most people miss: the CrownGuard system is designed for crowns with at least 2 inches of existing concrete depth to bond to. If your crown is thinner than that, or if the concrete has crumbled down to the brick course, you need a full crown rebuild first, then the HeatShield as a sealing layer. You can identify your product by checking the bucket or bag label near the mixing instructions: CrownGuard ships in a two-part system (resin and aggregate), while the mortar kit is a single-component mix. HeatShield does not sell directly to homeowners, so if you bought the product online, it came from a distributor and may not be the current formulation. We install both versions and keep the current CrownGuard system stocked on our trucks. If you have an older HeatShield bucket from before 2018, that formulation is discontinued and we’ll match it to the current equivalent. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield, but we’ve installed their products since 2012.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Hairline cracks reappearing within 1-2 years of the repair. This usually means the original crown wasn’t properly prepped: old loose concrete left underneath, or the HeatShield was applied too thin. In Astoria’s freeze-thaw cycle, water gets into a hairline crack, freezes, and widens it within a single winter.
  • White mineral deposits (efflorescence) on the exterior brick below the crown. Water is moving through the crown and leaching salts out of the mortar. It’s not just cosmetic: those salts mean water has been traveling for months, and the brick faces will eventually spall.
  • Spalling: brick faces popping off or flaking near the top of the chimney. When water freezes inside the brick, the outermost layer breaks away. We see this on Astoria rowhouses all the time, especially on the north-facing side where the brick never gets direct sun to dry out.
  • Damp drywall or water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace. Water that gets through a failed crown doesn’t always run down the flue. Often it travels between the chimney masonry and the house framing, showing up as ceiling damage a few feet away from the fireplace itself. The crown is the first place we check.
  • Visible gaps between the crown and the flue liner or brick. Look for a separation where the concrete meets the clay or metal liner. Even a quarter-inch gap in Astoria weather will let enough water through to soak the flue. If you see this, don’t wait until fall.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Astoria, a HeatShield crown repair typically falls between $450 and $1,100 installed. The range depends on three things: crown size (a standard single-flue rowhouse chimney is at the low end; a wide double-flue or a chimney with a large footprint is at the high end), how much of the old crown we have to remove and rebuild before applying the HeatShield, and access (a chimney that needs a full roof setup costs more than one a tech can reach from a ladder). Every job includes a written price before we start, a written scope that names exactly what we’re doing, and a written warranty. We apply the HeatShield product according to the manufacturer’s spec, photograph the crown before, during, and after, and leave the photo record with you whether you book the repair or not. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard has required a documented photo record on every job since 2009.

You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for visible cracks, missing concrete chunks, or gaps around the flue liner. What you can’t safely do is climb onto an Astoria rowhouse roof and prep a crown properly. Crown repair means working at height, often on a sloped or peaked roof with limited footing. The prep work is also more involved than it looks: you must remove all loose concrete, create a clean bonding surface, and mix the HeatShield product to the manufacturer’s exact ratio in the right temperature range. If the product fails because it was mixed wrong or applied to a dirty surface, the manufacturer won’t honor the warranty, and you’ll be paying for the same repair twice. That’s the part most DIY failures share: a $380 materials order, a weekend on the roof, and a crown that’s cracked again before the next heating season. If you’d rather have it done once, call us at (516) 301-1549 and we’ll send a tech with the right product already on the truck. Corrine Halstead has been doing this work in Queens long enough to know that a crown repair is only as good as the prep underneath it.
